What is a Hidden Job Market?
Many job openings are not listed. In fact, in all professions and industries, it is estimated that only 20% of all available jobs ever get advertised by employers. The legal field is no exception to this general rule of thumb.
Many hiring managers of law firms prefer to do hiring via word of mouth and through connections with those they have confidence in to refer suitable candidates on a highly confidential basis. With a 40+ year history servicing the legal field in the Lower Mainland area, we have developed lasting relationships with our clients. Our referrals are often considered to be a personal referral due to the longevity of our working relationships with the hiring managers of most of the firms in the Vancouver area.
Why would a job not be listed anywhere?
Job openings that cannot be immediately advertised come about for a variety of reasons. While it is true that sometimes an opening is about to come up as a change needs to be made in the team, in many cases the reason for confidentiality is because new lawyers are joining the firm, but announcements are set to be made at a future date. Sometimes a retirement is imminent. Sometimes the job is being added due to an anticipated increase in workload in a specific area of law. And, it is often the case that the firm wishes to promote someone but needs to cover their current position first before announcing the change!
